NDIS FUNDING PERIODS
From 19 May 2025, the NDIS introduced funding periods to new and reassessed plans. Under the new system, participants will receive their funding in smaller amounts (3-month increments), rather than the full plan upfront. These changes will affect how supports are delivered, claimed, and reported and it is important that participants are aware of the changes.
There is no impact to participants until they receive a new or reassessed plan. At that stage, it imperative that providers are up to date with these changes to prevent any payment discrepancies.
FAQ’s:
What is the funding period?- The NDIS Funding periods will usually be set at 3 months
When does it start? - Your funding periods begin on your plan’s start date, not the start of the calendar month. For example, if your plan starts on 15 June, then that’s when your first funding period begins — not the 1st of June
Will this change the total amount of my NDIS plan? – No, funding periods don’t change the total amount of funding in a participant’s plan, only when the funding becomes available
What happens if a provider charges more than the available funding? - Claims for supports that go over the available funding will not be paid
What happens if I don’t use all my funds during the funding period? – Any unused amounts will roll over to the next funding period within the same plan – please note, and unused funds won’t carry over into new plans
How do claims work now? - Claims for services or supports must match the funding period they were delivered in. If a support or session crosses over two periods, it may need to be split into two separate claims (this is still being clarified by NDIA). If a claim exceeds the available funding in the current period (even including rolled-over funds), the claim will be rejected
Will this change Service Agreement with Providers? - Potentially yes, but this is not for you to worry about as providers will need to document supports that align with the new funding periods
What happens if I need more of my NDIS funding sooner? - If you need more funding sooner (e.g. due to front-loading for setup or assessments), you must ask for a variation during your planning meeting, or submit a request for a plan reassessment
